I have a long wall in my dining room where I hang my samplers when they come home from the framers. So as soon as I get home from the frame shop (I use Cindy Dunlow in Ocala, FL) I get my hubby to help me hang the framed pieces. I let the samplers live on this wall until I move them to a bedroom, the entry, family room, etc. I have cross stitch in almost every room in my home.
There are two samplers in the above photo that are not my work. My dear Mother did the Last Supper and on the top row, the third one from the left is an antique sampler from a girl's school in England and it is approx. 150 years old. The sampler on the bottom left is my own design.

So I picked up this little sampler. The sampler looked easy in the photo (I didn't read over the instructions) and once the border was done it wasn't any bigger than my hand.

However, After I got well into the little project I discovered stitching over 1 (on 40 ct), satin stitch, tons of French knots, straight stitches, and a funny stitch that makes a flower that I have never done beflore! The little sampler is really turning out pretty but it's small size is deceptive!

Here she is modeling the dress with a happy look on her face. The dress is a little wrinkled after being crammed into a box for it's trip to SC via the US Post Office.
The streaks in the photo are from my inept camera skills and not actual streaks on the dress.

I still have to add shoulder straps and trim one piece of lace on the back but the dress is almost ready to mail to my daughter for Halloween! I will get those shoulder straps added and take one last photo before I box up the dress to mail out on Saturday!

I wonder what I could do with the ruffly train piece that I cut off the dress? Hem it and make some kind of ruffly wrap? We'll work on that piece later...
The Making of a Masquerade Costume Part 2

Progress on the Wedding Dress that's becoming a Masquerade Costume for my middle daughter:

I have cut off the long ruffly train - that thing was big enough to cover the queen sized bed in my guest room! I hemmed the edge of the dress where I cut off the train. ( I have to find a project for that big ole ruffly train)

Here is the dress in a dye bath. The dress is in the washer soaking in two packs of Red I Dye for poly fabrics and a lot of Boiling water. The dye does stain your washer - I knew it would from reading reviews online but my washer is ancient so what do I care what color it is inside, the red might be an improvement over the dingy grayish white. I turn on the agitator every 15 minutes or so and let it run for a couple of minutes. I have also sacrificed an old wooden spoon that I have been using to 'stir' the dress in the dye bath.

Here is the dress after about an hour soaking in the hot water. The ruffles have taken on an almost burgundy color while the satin of the dress is lighter - my daughter is really liking the results so far!

The button and sequins have taken on some of the dye as well - I was not sure what was going to happen to the buttons and sequins.

So my lovely middle daughter says she wants a masquerade costume for Halloween. Now Halloween costumes are a big deal at my house and when the kids were little we planned months in advance and out came the sewing machine. However, a masquerade costume sounds like a Big undertaking especially once the lovely middle daughter tells me she wants the dress Really Big with Hoops to hold it out and everything - so my mind starts working on the project while I sleep.

My mind settled on the following idea - an old wedding dress, you know, one of those 80's things that was huge and overcome with ruffles and sparkly things. I have just the thing. I have a closet full of old wedding dresses and old prom gowns. For some of the dresses I paid as much as $10 and some of them were gifts to me just to 'get rid of this old thing.'

Here are photos of the wedding dress I decided to destroy in the quest for a beautiful masquerade gown. The beautiful lady in the photo is not my lovely middle daughter - it's her older sister who I blackmailed into trying on the dress for the photo op (the promise of home made cookies got her hopping right into this big old sparkly thing).

The dress was so big I had to push her up the stairs. I don't know how Scarlett was able to walk!

The back of the 80's wedding dress is even more amazing with tons of ruffles. I wonder if the bride that wore this huge dress down the aisle is still married?

I ordered some hoops from Ebay - why reinvent the wheel when I can get hoops that are plenty good enough for a costume for less than $15 shipping included? Here's the hoops and I have a friendly warning for anyone ordering hoops over the internet. This package will arrive at your house and you think 'that can't possibly be the hoops as the package is not near big enough.' So innocently I opened the package and started to remove the hoops and they suddenly achieved a life of their own and leapt out of the package and took over my office. Think about what happens when you pull the little plug thing on an inflatable life boat and you'll get the picture!

My next adventure with the wedding/masquerade dress is going to be cutting off the huge ruffly train and dying the dress red, yes, this beautiful old 1980's ruffly, sparkly, white wedding dress is getting a new life as a Red masquerade gown - wait and see!
I started this sampler February 28th and I finished on April 7th.
Here is a photo of the completed sampler and I graphed a new verse for the sampler since I was not fond of the verse on the pattern. This pattern was in Just Cross Stitch Magazine in 1985.
I purchased two boxes of supplies from her grand daughter and I have also taken a couple of pieces to finish that she had started stitching. Here is the first project that we have worked on 'together.' She had stitched part of the border, the large alphabet, the small alphabet in the box on the left and the flower in the middle. I have found a small mistake that she made in the vase of the flower in the middle she forgot to cross a stitch. Should I leave the mistake that she made or should I fix it? I will put both names on the sampler when it's finished - hers and mine!
I started it late evening Feb 28th and this is where I left off on March 14th. It's coming along nicely and I am already anxious to start another project. Sometimes I am just in the mood to start new projects!
I had originally estimated that I would spend 13 weeks on the sampler but I travel with my job and I was away from home for several weeks while the sampler was in progress and this sampler is too big to take along as a travel project.
I used 30ct Melinda Cloth that was originally a powder blue but after a couple of dye baths in espresso it became a beautiful soft tan with hints of green and I left some streaks in the fabric on purpose. My fabric cut was approx. 36" x36" on the 30 count and I used one strand of the recommended black silk and a red au ver a soir for the red parts.

This sampler was a joy to stitch but I would have never been able to keep my place if I had not spent the time to grid the fabric. See the older posts below where I am working on the Francophile Sampler. There are also photos of where I am dying the fabric.
I went online and found directions to The Stitcher's Garden.
Since I had plenty of time I browsed and browsed. The shop owner was Very Nice and there are 100's of beautiful samples on the walls. If you are ever in the Albuquerque, NM area be sure to take some time to enjoy this shop. Here are photos of two of her stitched samples that I purchased the supplies to make.
One of the reasons I stick with a small piece is so I can stitch on the plane or in the airport without spreading my supplies all over the guy next to me and another reason is so I can fit the project in a little ziploc bag - my pattern, thread, fabric and baby nail clippers all fit in the bag which I slip into my purse.
Here is my little Halloween travel piece all framed up and hanging on the wall!

I have really been in the Mood to stitch but not in the mood to blog. So I vowed to spend a little time showing you some of my finishes from the end of last year - 2013 - and even some new finishes from 2014. Here is the first of the photos and I am starting with a Lizzie Kate Halloween. This project was so much fun to stitch!
I finished a whole stack of projects last year and I already have a finish for 2014. So my goal over the next couple of weeks is to get some photos on my blog so you can all see them!
Have a great stitchy 2014!Lisa Kathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05512753973006005600noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-563248263736980260.post-59414110301257525552013-06-28T06:48:00.000-07:002013-06-28T21:54:20.613-07:00UFO'sHow many UFO's do you have? I can't truly answer the question because I have no idea. When I first came to Florida I moved three times in one year as I searched for the 'perfect home.' Now we are in a big old Tudor house that we are renovating. My needlework is here and there with projects started and lost found in boxes and closets and old suitcases where I took a project on a trip and then promptly abandoned it once I arrived home.
I am making an effort to combine all of my craft projects in one place. I have a bin allotted for projects started but not completed - my UFO's. The projects are all in gallon ziploc plastic bags and I have put a list on the outside of any threads or items needed to complete the project. My organization efforts are slowed down by reading the patterns, enjoying the threads and general daydreaming. My hope is that I will come across my daughter's birth sampler that I started and only lacked maybe 1/4 of the stitching to be complete. Here is the travel project that I finished last week in Birmingham, AL.
It's hard to photograph a sampler that has been framed and is under glass in my sunny breakfast area!
It's a Unique sewing machine made by the Davis company and from the serial number it was made between 1898 - 1905. The cabinet has some misuse but it came with all kinds of bits and bobs and it works! My dear Hubby is going to clean and wipe down the cabinet with some wood conditioners and see what he can do for it.

Here is the machine in it's cabinet:

Here's a closer photo of the machine:

Here's the manual that we found in the drawer. I am not sure if it goes with this machine.

And last of all here's all of the bits that were in the drawers - all kinds of different feet, needles, bobbins with old thread, an extra bobbin shuttle and a lot of little things that I have no idea what they are supposed to do!
